Cities with Distribution Networks but Without Water Treatment Facilities
Only 84 cities out of 217 (38%) are furnished with water treatment facilities. Other cities are directly fed with water from deep wells with no treatment of what so ever kind. Many of the deep wells are aging and the well sleeve is corroded allowing seepage water to mix with water supply .
In many cases the seepage water is contaminated with chemical fertilizers and domestic sewage.
Villages without Water Treatment Facilities
Among the 4617 Egyptian villages, only 1985 villages (42%) are furnished with water supply networks. Aging of pipes that results in cracking and explosion in pipes and the lack of maintenance, cause mixing of water supplies with seepage water, which is commonly contaminated with wastewater.
Only 185 of the 4617 villages (4%) are furnished with water treatment facilities. Many of these facilities are producing potable water with sub standards. The reason is the bad operation, low maintenance level and working beyond the design criteria.
